As you can see, I’ve finally changed over to an open-source, valid-code solution, and I wonder if the WordPress folks purposely make the default install this ugly in order to encourage people to tinker with it. And, yeah, that’s what I’ll be continuing to work on tonight; trying to adapt my old three-column CSS layout to this thing. I’m hoping the comment spam will abate some, too. Anyway: poke around, kick the tires, let me know what’s broken?
Waiting in the wings: some more stuff on Freirean critical pedagogy as enacted in the U.S., with some contrasting perspectives from Richard E. Miller and Bill Thelin, since a valuable recent exchange with the latter spurred my memory and got me thinking about the differing cultural and economic courses of action by others who’ve written on the topic.
Hey! It worked! More tweaking: got Google searches for the old MT links here redirected, thanks to Alex King. Don’t know why WP chewed up my alphabetized categories like that, but I’m working on it. Next up is working on the linkage and getting that sidebar straight; after that, colors and layout. And how ’bout them pretty archival URLs? I gotta say, I’m pretty impressed by the WordPress community. (Ow! Ow! OK, Charlie, Drupal’s great too! Now lay off, wouldja? 😉 )
Made some changes to your blogroll too, I see! Only eighteen now? A couple of unexpected people got the axe this time. Sometimes I wonder when it will be my head on the chopping block. 😛
And now I see they’re back! LOL
I’ve stalked the WordPress community and have a file of stuff for when I have time to make a switch. You may also find some useful information at Harrison’s (who I think has a category on his side bar) and Wolf Angel, both of whom have conquered the ugly stick with their plug-ins. And Shelley Powers.
Cool on the new! I had no idea you were moving to Word Press.
Thanks, Clancy and Michelle!
And, well, Clancy: no chopping block, babe — there’ll just come a day when you tell me: “Go, Grasshopper. I have sheltered you from the world for too long. You must find your own way, now. ” And I’ll be all like, “But, Master, why?” And you’ll be like, “When you cease to strive to understand, Grasshopper, then you will know without understanding.” And I’ll be like, “But, Master, why?” And you’ll be like, “Oh, get off my blogroll, you dipshit.” And I’ll be like, “But, Master, why?” 😉
I dunno. Twenty just feels right, I guess.
Categories auto-sort by ID: you can see how to deal with it at the WP Wiki. http://wiki.wordpress.org/wp_list_cats
I also have all the info on how to do the post-by-post navigation (much of which I got from Shelley Powers at Burningbird), and probably some other fixes floating around as well. Scriptygoddess has stuff, too. And if you can figure out how to get post-by-email working . . .
Hey, thanks, Michelle. I think most of the posts about WordPress are filed under my Blogtech category. I’m happy to offer whatever help I can — though, of course, there are many people more qualifed to do this than I am 🙂
I’d also look into a Kubric-based design. It comes with a lot of nice additions, such as a better search results page, better archive pages, etc. It also uses fixed-width text display, which is favored by most usability experts.
And what to my wondering eyes did appear?!
Didn’t know you were making the move, Mike. Looking good. Harrison and WA will be indispensable. I will be worthless (I look to them when I need help).
