At the Met

Saturday night, twenty-two of us went to see the Franco Zeffirelli production of Turandot at the Metropolitan Opera (click for a larger version):

At intermission, we were taken backstage and allowed to watch the mechanics and massive coordination involved in changing Zeffirelli’s glorious sets, and met and talked with the charming soprano Erika Sunnegårdh, who sang in the title role.

It was a pretty good Saturday night.

Do you own a tux? I don’t even own a suit!

Fraid so. With the new job here at the Point, where I’ll likely need to wear a tux at least once a year even without being faculty representative for the opera club, so if I only wear it four times — three, now — it’ll still be cheaper than renting one.

Wow, so like white super dressy uniforms? Are those for cadets or also for commisioned folks?

(I was going to say that your students clean up really well, but then, I’m guessing they generally look pretty sharp? Must be a nearly unique college population!)

These days I think Cadets only — the white mess uniform for soldiers, IIRC, was de-authorized a while back. They’re called “Indigo Whites” for the color of the sash that you see the upperclassmen wearing, and yeah, they look sharp. Believe it or not, we ate at a Mexican restaurant before that picture, so those are some careful students. Note the differences between the dress mess that the female Major is wearing versus the somewhat less formal dress blues that the male Lieutenant is wearing.
