Had a fine time in the City today, seeing the Charlie Parker Jazz Festival at Tompkins Square Park. Chico Hamilton and his band were terrific. Later, however, we were disappointed to hear that Abbey Lincoln wouldn’t be able to perform. . .
. . . although the surprise of Cassandra Wilson showing up to sing in her stead kinda eased that sting a bit.
Lucky! I LOVE Cassandra Wilson, especially live. I saw her several years ago in Indianapolis and still count that one of my favorite performances ever. (Although, truth be told, there were a lot of performances to hold in memory that year in Indianapolis, including the now late great Mr. Elvin Jones.)
But, yeah, it would have been nice to hear Abbey Lincoln. I never have.
