Toward a Theory of Technology
Writing is a technology in four senses: artifact, know-how, system of production and system of use. Those four senses are joined by one operation, discretization, which cuts the continuous labor of writing into countable units. Every instrument that reads writing also writes an access clause about what may be known of a writer, and evolving detection technologies yield contestation over control of the record. Technologies substitute capital-intensive processes for labor-intensive ones; the labor saved is stored; and questions of exemption, replacement, or payment are settled outside the machine. Stored labor becomes capital in a relation, placed into use.

The Access Clause
Every account of a writer carries an access clause: what it may treat as knowable about an interior. AI detection wrote the readable clause into classrooms by default; the version histories that replace it move the clause from the text to the process and leave open who holds the record.
-
Access to What?
Writing’s records are kept by default and sold back as proof of process. Keystroke logs prove a body sat at the keyboard and say nothing of a mind; custody of the record follows ownership of the machine, and students pay for borrowed access in the coin of their keystrokes.
-
Composition: Noun and Verb
Composition names both a thing and the act that made it, and writing operates as a technology in all four senses of the word: artifact, know-how, system of production, system of use. Discretization joins them, and a technology’s values show in its use record rather than in anyone’s intent.
-
Substitution: Capital and Labor
Technologies substitute capital-intensive processes for labor-intensive ones; the labor saved is stored, and who is exempted, replaced, or made to pay is decided outside the machine. From the division of mental labor to the word processor and the language model, the savings travel up and the labor travels down.
-
Transformation: Storage and Time
If the labor a technology saves is stored, where does it go, and whose time was it? Stored labor becomes capital only in a relation, at a use: a model keeps writing’s skill and drops the writer, a profile keeps the pattern and drops the time, and an archive keeps both.
